Doncaster Aviation Meeting 1909 Recent Acquisition
The first aviation meeting in England was held at Doncaster Racecourse from 18-23 October 1909. Around a dozen aviators were present, the most famous being Léon Delagrange and Roger Sommer. The Trust has recently acquired a souvenir paper napkin (above), printed for the occasion by Eclipse Stationery & Printing Co. of 79 Vicar Lane, Leeds. The rather incongruous Japanese border was presumably one of several offered by the printer, with the text specific to the occasion being added within the black frame in the centre. Together with a copy of the programme and the poster (below), plus an original admission ticket, the napkin adds to the memorabilia for this event in the Trust’s Collection. Hi-resolution images of these and other items in the Collection are available, subject to terms and conditions.
