Lady Icarus
One of the roles of the Royal Aero Club has been to certify flight performance records, such as height and speed. Our Collection includes the official documents for a number of these achievements. One such file includes the height record set on 10 July 1928 in the Short “Mussel” Seaplane G-EBMJ, flown by Lady (Mary) Heath – left – with Sicele O’Brien – right – as passenger. At that time, Lady Heath was one of the best-known women in the world. Her fascinating story is told in Lindie Naughton’s book “Lady Icarus”.
