Cairo Celebration of McClean's Nile Flight Centenary
On Sunday 9 March, the British Embassy in Cairo and the Cairo Children’s Museum jointly held a ceremony to commemorate the centenary of Frank (later Sir Francis) McClean’s Nile flight from Alexandria to Khartoum between January and March 1914. More information about the commemorative event is at https://www.gov.uk/government/world-location-news/the-uk-celebrates-the-centenary-of-sir-francis-mccleans-nile-flight. The Children’s Museum exhibits include some of the photographs taken during the flight (below left) and a scaled-down replica of McClean’s Short S.80 seaplane (below right, under construction). The Royal Aero Club Trust has been delighted to support this event by making available its collection of 400 contemporary photographs – both for the exhibition and for the construction of the replica. The photographs are now showcased on this web-site.
